Phase I: 1989

The POTC was established after deploying 14 UNMOs to Angola in 1989. That was the first time JAF exposed to UN peacekeeping missions.

The idea was to establish a wing attached to the Royal Military Academy to train and prepare troops participating in UN peacekeeping operations. The main aim during this stage was to create a foundation of subject matter experts that could later contribute to the expansion of the center’s capabilities.

In 2002, the Centre was renamed to be "Peace Operation Training Center" and quickly enhanced its courses and expertise and became a regional Centre of excellence.

In 19 September 2007 The POTC was detached from the RMA and became an organic unit of the Directorate of Joint Training and was relocated at its current facility.
On 11 July 2011 the Centre was declared as NATO Partnership Training Center since.

After the POTC’s humble beginnings, the Center expanded rapidly as the requirement increased to train more soldiers for similar operations as Jordan became more heavily involved in peacekeeping missions.
The first course held at the POTC was the Pre-deployment Course No. 1 from 7 to 13 August 1992. The Center started training UN Military Observers in 1994 by conducting 5 consecutive courses. This phase has continued for the years from 1989-1996.

Phase II: 1996

POTC was staffed with experienced instructors from those who had finished their peacekeeping missions. Training at the Center was expanded from troop’s pre-deployment training to other more specialized training for Officers. Following our worldwide operational success a new training strategy was developed providing course participants with the necessary skills to work professionally and efficiently in this new peacekeeping environment. Expanding the Institute’s capabilities further was our only way forward.

The POTC was built up inside the Royal Military Academy Campus and named as "Peacekeeping Institute". The Center officially opened on 26th August 1996, and remained attached to the Royal Military Academy. In this location the Center was organized and provided with qualified instructors.

Phase III: 1999

In 1999, the POTC started training on regional and international level, by conducting a Pre-deployment Course for participants from United Arab Emirates, and sending Mobile Training Team to the same country in the same year and for the same purpose.

The Center was renamed to be "Peace Operation Training Center" and quickly enhanced its courses and expertise and became a regional centre of excellence. The Institute is one of a kind in the Middle East. Close cooperation with the United States Enhanced International Peacekeeping Capabilities (EIPC) program further facilitated this. New training facilities were built along with improved course material covering the myriad the United Nations peacekeeping sphere of influence.

In 2003, The POTC introduced a new training, Cultural Awareness Training, and has gained a leading role in this subject by conducting several courses for foreign participants, mainly from The United States.

On 1st October 2009, the project of Arab Training Village has started, and the construction lasted for one year. The Village is designed to simulate any conflict area in the world and to be suitable for all kinds of training, in order to carry out the whole exercises regarding our courses such as Peace Operations and Culture Awareness, and, as a result, to enhance the overall competence of The POTC. This project was funded by US Government through the Global Peace Operations Initiative (GPOI).
